First Fruits Friday - Here I Am

In the Bible, the book of 2 Samuel talks about the life of King David. There is a part which tells us that after taking the throne through God’s will, David asked if there were any other relatives of Saul, the previous king who, in jealousy, had tried to murder him. David wanted to show Saul’s family kindness because of his bond with Saul’s son, Jonathan, who had died in war.

Johnathan had a son who was crippled and living in hiding. His name was Mephibosheth. David sent for him, so he could, “show the kindness of God to him (2 Samuel 9:3).” When Mephibosheth came to David, he was expecting to be killed. David responded and said, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Johnathan and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father and you shall eat at my table always. (2 Samuel 9:7).”

This story seems small and short, when in reality, it is full of love and a reflection of God’s mercy to us. We are like Mephibosheth, we receive our King’s grace and mercy every day. A great example of this incredible mercy was shared with us this week: Former Abortionist turned Pro-Life Advocate, Dr. Haywood Robinson, came to visit Seneca and shared his testimony with us. What a powerful story of redemption!

Every day is an opportunity to ask God for His mercy, and to tell Him: “Here I am.” One day, Dr. Robinson did this and God showed His infinite mercy to him. His promises are forever and for everyone. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

What was ours, God will return.  He will restore what life stole from us. We are invited to live in the King's house, to eat at the King's table, to wear the King's clothes, and to sit next to the King forever. Our lives will never be the same when we receive His mercy. What a glorious day when our King sends for us and we say to Him, “Here I am,” like Dr. Robinson did.
