First Fruits Friday - Just be Yourself
As the hands and feet of Christ, on the sidewalk of the abortion facility, it can seem overwhelming; like being in a losing battle. The culture has celebrated abortion and made women and men believe that abortion is the solution to a problem pregnancy, but that could not be further from the truth. As a volunteer-based ministry, we are constantly recruiting to fill the much needed gaps in manpower to serve the plethora of women who need a listening ear with the love of Christ as we journey with them from their darkest moment, to the elation of meeting their baby, and through to their baby's second birthday. The need is great for more volunteers to help!! Enjoy this reflection from our Sidewalk Program Manager and pray if God may be calling YOU to be His hands and feet!!
When it comes to volunteering on the sidewalk of an abortion facility, many individuals shy away. A lot of times it is because they think it is not possible to relate to the women who are going to have an abortion. Maybe it is because they have never been in that situation, or maybe because they feel they won’t know what to say. Let me take a moment and assure you that you do not have to have all the answers to be an effective sidewalk advocate. All that is needed is a passion for the cause and to truly be yourself!
Last week while on the sidewalk, there was a young woman who came for her abortion appointment. This particular day was quite warm and the sun was exceptionally bright. One of our sidewalk advocates instructed her to park at Seneca and then approached her when she got out of the vehicle. He jokingly said to her, “Hey there, I am going to need those shades you’ve got, they are awesome and this sun is killing my eyes.” To put it in perspective for you, these sunglasses were a bit unique, which was a quick conversation starter for the advocate to approach her. The young woman and her partner entered Seneca. After speaking with a sidewalk advocate here at Seneca, they felt the love and chose to go on to the mobile clinic…canceling their abortion appointment altogether.
I said all that to say this, never doubt your ability to make a difference. Something as simple as sunglasses could have possibly been the difference between a woman choosing life or going in for that abortion. All it takes is a little faith and a lot of love and kindness.
