First Fruits Friday-What is Bereaved Mothers Day?

What is Bereaved Mother’s Day?

Science tells us that from the moment of conception, a new human being comes into existence.  And as Christians, we know that every child is a unique, unrepeatable gift from God, endowed with an immortal soul and destined to live eternally with Him in heaven.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.”

-Jeremiah 1:5

When it comes to fighting abortion, we are able to articulate and defend our beliefs that each person is made in the image and likeness of God, willed for his or her own sake.  But when it comes to miscarriage, there can be a disconnect.  Here at Seneca, we are trying to make the connection.

Seneca’s vision is “to create a culture of HOPE where the beauty of LIFE is celebrated and healing is received.”  We honor every life, no matter how short.  We recognize miscarriagefor what it is—the tragic death of an unborn child.  When a client suffers the loss of a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss, we extend our condolences.  If possible, we send them a sympathy card and flowers.  Most importantly, though, we simply say “I’m so sorry for your loss.”

In a world that values pregnancies in terms of whether they are “wanted” or “planned,” we remind women and families that the value of an unborn child’s life does not depend on the circumstances of his or her conception or the feelings of his or her parents.  We affirm that the heartbreaking pain women and men feel at losing their child is valid.  We sit with them in their grief and offer to walk with them as they struggle to move on.  And when they are ready, we share with them the hope that comes with Our Lord’s declaration:

“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

– Matthew 19:14

Each year on the second Sunday in May, we celebrate all mothers—biological, adoptive, and spiritual.  That day can be very hard for moms who are suffering from infertility or whose children have died.  If you are a bereaved mother, our hearts go out to you.  Please know that you are seen, and we are praying for you in a special way this week!

On the first Sunday in May, we honor all Bereaved Mothers.  Please join us this Sunday at 3:00 PM at Seneca as we gather to serve these mothers and families by creating care packages to comfort them in their time of need and invite them to hope and healing through Jesus Christ.   Together, let’s love and support these women.  Let’s build the culture of life.
